Frederick A. Bahr, 83, of Orlando, Florida passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2020.

Fred was born on January 20, 1937 in Brooklyn, NY, to Frederick and Lillian Bahr. He joined the Navy in 1956 and served on the U.S.S. Essex as an electrician. This gave him the opportunity to circumnavigate the globe. After his Navy service, he worked for NY Bell as a lineman climbing telephone poles, eventually becoming a trainer. In 1979 he took a job in Orlando with AT&T, from which he eventually retired. There was no home maintenance job too difficult for Fred. He was a master of Do It Yourself. After 9/11 he joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary, His boat was registered as an official C.G.A. vessel and he helped guard the water around Cape Canaveral during Space Shuttle launches. After Hurricane Katrina he went to work for FEMA to help people obtain government assistance for the loss of their homes.

Fred was a member of a gun club on Long Island and built a pistol range in his basement. He loved to travel with his family and took long camping trips all over the country. He was an avid outdoorsman. He bought a jeep to take his family to off road parts of Fire Island on summer weekends. He bought a sailboat to ply the waters of the Great South Bay, and a fishing boat to fish, and fish, and fish them. Fred hunted small game on eastern Long Island in the winter. He enjoyed driving his VW bug onto the frozen Connetquot River, pulling his children and their friends around the ice on a sled. He was an infamous practical joker who loved to prank family, friends and co-workers. Once in Florida he took up bass fishing and joined a fishing club and participated in many tournaments around the state. Frequently camping with family, he boated, fished, and caught scallops, lobster, and shrimp. After retiring, he and Judy often toured the country in their RV.

Frederick is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Bahr, and cherished children: Kathleen (Mark) Londergan, Steven (Terri) Bahr, Michael (Monica) Bahr, and Christopher (Stephanie) Bahr. He is survived by his adored grandchildren: Mitchell Londergan, Aimee (Zach) Goins, Matthew Bahr, Jason Bahr, Tessa Bahr, Lydia Bahr, and Gavin Bahr; and one great-grandchild, Easton Goins, on the way. Frederick is also survived by one brother: Richard (Nina) Bahr.

The family welcomes donations to two of Fred’s favorite causes, the Sierra Club or National World War II museum, as an expression of sympathy.

Memories & Condolences

Judy and family, I am sorry to hear about Fred's passing. We worked together at AT&T on the DOJ case back in 1978. He was a good friend and we would occasionally meet for lunch. The last time I spoke to him, he told me that he had some health problems. When we moved to Clermont, we stopped our lunch meeting. I am sorry that we did not communicate these last few years, as I called his home number, but I felt anxious with no response. I would have liked to have attended his funeral services since I have many memories I would have liked to share with his family and friends. I wish his family my deepest condolences. Miss you, Fred! Fred I want to let everyone know that you were such a great person and gentleman . You were always so serious about doing a terrific job for the Auxiliary. We had many discussions, especially about our Navy experiences. Your service in the Navy was very hard during the 1950's. Like many young men, you took it like everything was suppose to be that way. Those ships you served on were WWII types with no comfort, poor air quality, and the food was substandard. Our Navy Women's group still has your service dress blues in our museum. You were one very thin sailor back then. You were so nice to pass your uniform to us. I will miss you at our meetings and it has been a pleasure serving with you in the Auxiliary. For my shipmate I wish, "Fair Winds and Following Seas".
