George E. Dankovchik

1927 - 2020
George E. Dankovchik Sr., age 92, passed away on May 6, 2020, in Titusville, FL.

George was born in Weirton, WV, on October 5, 1927, and graduated from Weir High School in 1947.

George served as a hospital corpsman with the U.S. Navy in Norfolk and Portsmouth, VA, from 1948 to 1950. He missed his calling and always regretted not pursuing work in the medical field.

Instead, upon discharge, he returned to Weirton and worked for Weirton Steel at the Williams Country Club and later as a pipefitter in the mill itself. He retired from the mill in 1988 and moved to Titusville, FL.

In 2004, George, along with his wife and daughter, began a second career as owners/operators of a Bruster’s Ice Cream store in Titusville. George was a master waffle cone maker and fixer of everything that broke down or needed repaired.

George was an avid reader and would read the newspaper front to back daily. He kept up with politics and Fox News. He was a great storyteller and could recount in vivid detail long ago escapades with his brothers and his experiences in the Navy.

He followed football and was a super fan of the West Virginia University Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. In Weirton he loved the sport of bowling and bowled in three leagues per week. When he moved to Florida, he and his wife Wilma became avid golfers and played golf several times per week.

He was a hard worker and a great handyman and would tackle any job whether it was painting, plumbing, construction, electrical, or mechanical.

George was preceded in death by his parents, John and Julia (Tomko) Dankovchik; and brother, Leonard Dankovchik.

George will be remembered with love by his wife of 69 years, Wilma (Vidas) Dankovchik; his son, George (Denise) Dankovchik Jr. of Weirton, WV; his daughter Wendy Dankovchik of Titusville, FL; and his granddaughter, Leah (Zach) Toothman of Morgantown, WV.

During George’s last month of life, he was extremely happy to meet his first great-grandson Brooks Toothman. George also leaves behind his beloved brother Robert (Francis) Dankovchik and several nephews whom he greatly admired.

George was a lifelong member of the St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Weirton, WV, and the St. Teresa Catholic Church in Titusville, FL.

The Dankovchik family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the Royal Oaks Nursing & Rehab Center and the Hospice of St. Francis, both in Titusville, FL, for taking great care of George over the last several months. In accordance with George’s wishes, the family will grieve privately.

Arrangements are by Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions in Titusville, FL, with entombment to follow in St. Paul Catholic Cemetery, in Weirton, WV.
