Hon. Benjamin M. DuBose, age 80, went to meet his maker on January 7, 2019.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his: wife Geraldine, daughter Tracy Steiner & husband Rob in Cocoa; Son Jeff DuBose and wife Celeste in Groveland, three grandchildren; Tina Morgan, Gino and Christian Alleva; and three great-grandchildren, Gio, Bella and Vivi Alleva.

Mr .DuBose was born in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, NY and graduated PS 115, McBurney H.S. and Brooklyn College with a degree in Police Science. He became a police officer with the Port Authority of NY & NJ and retired in 1979. During his tenure he was elected as a union delegate for over a dozen years before being elected Vice President for six years. He also served as a State and National delegate for the second largest police department in the State of NY

In 1964, during the Barry Goldwater days he was a Founder of the New York State Conservative Party and for over twenty years he was a state elected official for his party. He ran unsuccessfully for the NYS Senate in a predominantly Democratic area in Brooklyn, and received the Republican nomination as well.

Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s he was the Executive Director for the Flatlands Development Corp. A state funded, non-profit group that provided community services to over 150,000 residents in Brooklyn, NY. During this time he was the President of the Canarsie Historical Society, one of the most active historical groups in Brooklyn. He wrote and produced two magazines on the history of Brooklyn and wrote hundreds of articles for two local weeklies, plus articles for the NY Times, the Daily News and several Archeology publications. He served five years as Secretary for the NYC Chapter of the NYS Archeology Society.

In 1986 Gov. Mario Cuomo appointed him to the NYS Constitutional Bi-Centennial Commission. And in 1988 he was an invited guest to the Reagan White House.

He moved to Brevard County in 1996 and has been very active in community affairs: serving as a board member of his home owners association for over a dozen years and as president for two years. For six years he served as a Regional Vice President for the National Spanish American War Veterans and was active in the Liberty Bell Museums hundredth anniversary of the sinking of THE MAINE. As a long-time member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans he was their Public Relations Officer. For 20years he has been an active member of the Brevard Chapter Sons of the American Revolution and has served as a board member for almost the entire time, rising to President. During this time he has participated in many parades, given hundreds of historical talks and rose to a State Regional Vice President for 4 years, and served as a Member At Large on the State Board of Directors for 2 years. He has received over a dozen medal for his efforts, including the prestigious Patriot Medal presented to only 3 out of the 2,000+ state members each year and a Lifetime Achievement Medal from the Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition he was the creator and directed the ceremonies for The Last Naval Battle of the Revolutionary War which drew hundreds of marchers, at the Brevard Veterans Center on Merritt Island, for the first 9 years.

Ben and I graduated from McBurney together. He was such a nice fellow. Everyone liked and admired Ben. We reconnected at our fabulous fiftieth reunion and kept in touch all the years since. I recently realized that I hadn't received any emails from him, Googled him this morning and discovered the bad news. I am shocked and dismayed that we have lost dear Ben. He was a patriot, lived an accomplished and meaningful life, and I will miss him. My deepest sympathies to his family. Rest in peace, Ben.

Ben was far more than just a history buff. He enjoyed encouraging others to learn about the ideals on which our country was founded. Ben understood the importance of people not just talking, but getting involved and taking actions to make things better. The Brook Hollow community of Malabar, FL, will always appreciate Ben’s years of work on the HOA, serving as President, and also in other roles. Ben’s dedication of time, hard work, and focus made a positive difference that will continue on. Brook Hollow is a better place because of Ben, and he will be missed.

Mrs DuBose and Family,
Ben was my favorite speaker, when he spoke to our Genealocial Society, years ago in Titusville, Cocoa, and at the DAR Chapters. Always looked for him at the Tides.
He did so much for us all I see in his work in NY. To me he was just like me and my Gene, down to earth.
I'm sorry that I can not get over for his last apprence.

How I will miss the phone calls on birthdays and holidays, all the info about our family tree, and the stories of Canarsie and our family’s past. My most treasured memories of my cousin are marching over the Brooklyn Bridge after he bought it for a day, standing in as escort for my mother on my wedding day, and our many conversations through the years. Geraldine, Tracy, and Jeffrey, my heartfelt sympathy to you and your family during this difficult time. Benny was one of a kind and he will be missed so much.

Ben was an outstanding individual and contributed much to the historical research of Brevard County. He shared his love of history with many, and was always ready to take on a new project of historical significance. We had the pleasure of knowing Ben through our involvement with the Confederate Sons. Ben was always a friendly smiling face when we saw each other at parades, and he was proudly wearing his Revolutionary War uniform and always an encouragement to us as we were proudly wearing our Confederate uniforms. He did some programs for us at our monthly meetings and we always learned a lot from him. The man was a wealth of knowledge and always willing to share it with anyone interested. Ben was a true Patriot in every sense of the word, and loved his country. He will be sincerely missed by us all. God bless Ben and rest in peace. You led an awesome life.

Benny was a person whose personality was larger than life. He was smart, funny, outgoing and a true leader in every sense of the word. He was a history buff like his dad before him, researching and sharing all that he learned, the stories were fascinating. He could tell you all about American history, Brooklyn history, Canarsie history and most importantly; The DuBose family history which he treasured (as I do) most of all. He was very family oriented, always remembering family milestones and calling each of us on their birthday. He never forgot to call me on my birthday. I shared his love of books and history and it was he who got me the family tree so that I could join the Daughters of the American Revolution. As a child he always tried to come over on the holidays, and I remember him dressing as Santa Claus on Christmas eve. He was the glue that held all the DuBose extended family together making sure to connect with each of us on a personal level. I will hold these memories of him in my heart and wish my dear "cuz" much love and RIP. Love Susie

Such a beautiful tribute to a man who lived an amazing life..Uncle Benny was not my real uncle but back then everyone that was associated with your family was your aunt and uncle, so I will always remember him as such.. I have fond memories of going to Tracey and Jeffrey's house for party's and hangouts. They had the cool parents lol.. I remember in Canarsie Tracey had a giant peanut shaped room divider that we would always sit on.. We had a lot of fun! Buying the Brooklyn bridge..! May he rest in eternal peace, I will treasure those special memories always ..

To Tracy and Gerry,

Ben was a master of many projects, including those involving historical societies. He was a strong advocate for Canarsie and petitioned the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission in the hope of having certain particularly historic sections landmarked. I first met Ben when he and Ira were giving an in-depth tour of Canarsie in the early 1980s.

Ben participated in military reenactments, portrayed historically significant persons such as Theodore Roosevelt, organized parades and events with enthusiastic dedication, and did so much more. Ben's continuous flow of irresistible, humorous jokes and honest political comments, some by cartoon, were riveting. How he found time to accomplish this enormous amount with such a wide range of interests is remarkable.

Ben will always be remembered fondly.

I would like to send these words of consolation to those that loved this apostle Paul said what has been made possible by Jesus’ resurrection. “Since death is through a man,” said Paul, “resurrection of the dead is also through a man.” Because of the sin and imperfection passed on to us from Adam, we all die. However, by giving his perfect human life as a ransom, Jesus opened the way for mankind to be released from slavery to sin and death through the resurrection. Summing up the matter nicely, Paul wrote at Romans 6:23: “The wages sin pays is death, but the gift God gives is everlasting life by Christ Jesus our Lord.”
