Freddie Eugene Mathews (Gene), 79, of Merritt Island, Fl; retired Senior Chief Petty Officer for the U.S. Navy, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 17, 2016.

He was born April 13, 1937 in Wilmot, AK., to the late James Mathews and Ruth Driggers. He retired from the Navy in 1977. Gene loved his family, friends, never met a stranger, and was always "Standing tall and looking good." He is survived by his two daughters, Mary Wilbanks and Kelly Mathews, one granddaughter Megan (Mike) Brown Natale, and life-long friend and care-taker, Elaine Preston. He is also survived by three brothers, four sisters, countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 26, at 10:30 am at Newcomer Cremation and Funeral Service , 2400 S Washington Ave. Titusville, Fl. Funeral will follow at 11:30 am and Interment with full military honors will follow at 1:00pm at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery.
