Joyce Arlene Chumbley, age 79, of Orlando, Florida passed away on Saturday, March 24, 2018.

Joyce was born on June 2, 1938 in Indianola, IA. She was the only child of Ivan and Ada Claire (Ellis) Chumbley. Joyce lived and grew up in Northern California, studied in Hawaii, traveled to Europe with her parents, and moved to Orlando in early 1972.

Joyce earned a BA in fine arts while graduating cum laude from Ithaca College in 1960, her Masters in art from San Francisco State College in 1962, and her PhD in drama and theatre from the University of Hawaii in 1972. She started teaching at Jones College in Orlando, eventually rising to the position of Dean of the College.

Joyce had a rich and varied life. She was well-read and was dedicated to the arts and to work for social justice, worker rights, and environmental protection. She belonged to, participated in and started many organizations and groups, and did extensive research on topics of peace and justice. She will be deeply missed by her many friends and colleagues.

A memorial visitation and service will be held on June 2, 2018 from 3pm to 5pm at Langford Park, 1808 E Central Blvd, Orlando, FL 32803.

Joyce was a quite and sweet neighbor! She enjoyed talking to my daughters and visiting with my dogs. She also loved her cat dearly. She would be out side trying to always coax her inside to share her love with! Joyce was brilliant woman and was trying to improve the world! When speaking with her on several occasions, she would inform me of what she was working on and trying to conquer. It was our pleasure and honor to have such a driven and passionate neighbor next to us! She was an inspiration and I know that she is in a better place with her yorkies.

Dear Family,
My deepest sympathy for the loss of your dear loved one. Losing a loved one in death is very painful. May the God of tender mercies comfort you. (2 Corinthians 1:3,4) May you find comfort in the hope of the resurrection found in the Holy Scriptures at John 5:28,29 where Jesus promised that there was going to be a resurrection from the grave and they will hear his voice and come out. I have found comfort in this and I hope it comforts you also.

Joyce was a very warm and outgoing person who enjoyed good company. She had an excellent sense of humor. Learning and living a life filled with experience were among her passions. She actively sought to make the world a better place, and met with some success.

Joyce was an adventurer. She just couldn't wait to see how events and meetings would turn out. She approached all with great joy and a mischievous smile. For over twenty five years, we were great traveling companions (fellow travelers)?
She was a brilliant writer, a passionate speaker, a superb researcher, a strong debater, and ultimately, a wise and loving human being. At the moment, there seems like a void in the universe.
The day after she passed, there was the nation-wide March For Our Lives rally opposing the too easy acquisition of weapons of mass destruction. So many of us were marching "with Joyce." We knew she was with us every step of the way. I could almost see her with her oversized straw hat and sunglasses walking with vigor so that we would have to catch up to her. She was an audacious lady. An audacious leader.
Joyce will really be missed. That said, her spirit will always be with us. Her spirit and accomplishments transcend her physical death. They are obviously passed to her community of friends. Unbeknownst to the committed high school students and young collegians, it seems they have inherited the Joyce gene. They are soooo fortunate. So are the rest of us.

I will always remember Joyce as a dynamic, intelligent, energetic, and creative force in the world. She was involved in and interested in so many things and her curiosity and thirst for knowledge led her to many adventures and a rich and varied life. The memories I have of Joyce, as a friend and as a fellow activist are many, including the time we worked together on the Florida Climate Alliance, and Joyce, 14 years my senior, wore me out! She taught me so much, she was a role model, and I am honored to have been able to call her "friend."
